1st test day 2 | India vs South Africa – Cricket Fanatics Magazine

After bowling out India for 189, South Africa ended Day 2 at 93-7 with a lead of 63 in the first Test against India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

It was a quiet first hour, with South Africa aiming for an early breakthrough.

India took themselves to 75-1 when Simon Harmer scored. He found Washington Sundar’s lead narrowing for 29.

Shubman Gill (4) retired injured due to whiplash, with IND at 79-2.

India went past the 100-run mark when Keshav Maharaj found the lead from KL Rahul (39), who flew into the hands of slip. India were 109-3.

Just before lunch, Corbin Bosch cramped Rishabh Pant (27) with a short throw, which he tried to pull, but the ball swung through the air and Verreynne ran to his right to take a simple catch.

India went to lunch at 138-4.

They continued to chip away at the deficit, moving past 150, when Harmer got his second and took a difficult low catch to dismiss Dhruv Jurel (14). India were 153-5.

Harmer struck again after India had taken a lead, trapping Ravindra Jadeja (27) lbw.

Marco Jansen Kuldeep Yadav (1) tapped the next goal towards the keeper. India were 172-7.

Jansen cleared Mohammed Siraj as India were reduced to 187-8.

Harmer took the last wicket, Axar Patel (16) looped the ball to backward point. India were all out for 189 with a lead of 30 runs.

Harmer finished with 4-30 and Jansen with 3-35.

South Africa got to work.

Just before tea they lost their first wicket. A full and straight delivery from Yadav trapped Ryan Rickelton (11) lbw. SA was 18-1.

Jadeja dismissed Markram, a soft rejection – an attempted sweep saw him take the ball straight to his short leg. SA was 25-2.

SA took the lead but the wickets kept falling, Jadeja the destroyer. He took two wickets in the 17th over. The extra bounce hit Mulder’s glove via the keeper. The Zorzi was given a glove on the thigh pad of the short leg. SA was in big trouble at 40-4.

South Africa’s defensive approach was clearly not working.

Jadeja then bowled Stubbs for 5. SA were now 60-5.

Verreynne attempted a slog sweep and was bowled by Axar for 9. SA was now 75-6.

Jansen (13) had some luck with an attacking approach, but a sloppy sweep caused him to tap the ball on his body and slip. SA was 91-7.

The day’s play ended early due to poor lighting; South Africa finished 93-7 and a lead of 63.

Bavuma was not out on 29.
