103-year-old seller says goodbye to beloved house in Klemzig at auction – realestate.com.au

The auction of a house in Klemzig was the final farewell for the 103-year-old seller, which was marked with applause from those present.

Until now, she was the sole owner of the three-bedroom house, having built it in the 1970s.

A new family will write the next chapter for 14 Bowran Ave after buying it under the hammer for $1.311 million.

Selling agent Rachel Lawrie of Stadium Real Estate said she felt it was important that the owner and her daughter – both of whom she declined to name – attend the auction to conclude.

She even picked them up and took them to the auction on Monday evening.

“They were thrilled with the outcome,” she said.

“We had 20 registered bidders and there probably would have been 80 to 90 people there.

“The auction started at $1 million and quickly rose.

“The seller was very happy that a family had bought it.”

Ms Lawrie said the seller, who turns 104 next month, had difficulty hearing but was otherwise cheerful, even joking about raising the reserve price during the auction.

“The whole audience gave her a big round of applause, everyone was impressed,” she said.

“It was just a really nice party.”

The house, which sits on an 860 sqm block, has been well maintained over the years and the retro interior still looks as good as new.

Mrs Lawrie said the seller was proud of the house so it was in “immaculate condition” – she even made the curtains herself.

“She was a seamstress for RM Williams for decades,” she said.

Mrs Lawrie said although it was an emotional sale, the seller had accepted that she could no longer look after the house.

“There was a lot of joy at the auction,” she said.

Neighbors who loved the seller attended the auction to say goodbye to her, including a girl about 99 years her junior.

Mrs Lawrie treated her and her daughter to dinner after the auction – cakes at the Bakery on O’Connell, at the seller’s request.

She then returned her to her nursing home with photos that many children living on Bowran Ave had given her of themselves, as well as a gift basket and flowers from Stadium Real Estate.
