10-year-old killed at Parx during her 87th race – Horse racing mistakes

During the final race of the day yesterday at Parx, Bucks Some was, according to the chart, “injured and transported off the track by ambulance.” In my long experience with this, that combination – ‘injured, ambulance’ – almost always translates into death. And indeed, this pathetic girl is. I use that adjective here – I know, they’re all pathetic – because Bucks was ten years old and this was her 87th turn under the whip.

As you can probably guess, with such a long “career” (all but two of the 87 in PA, by the way) Bucks had plenty of exploiters. But the latter, Daniel Velazquez, deserves special venom. Velazquez, Bucks’ master for her last fifteen races, seemed determined to squeeze every last dime out of her surely battered body. And Parx, being one subsidized by the taxpayer number that pays first makes it so easy and attractive to do this. For example, last February 3, Bucks finished last of 12 at Parx, but Velazquez still walked away with $400.

One final note. In its (typically) dense, delusional – not to say morally bankrupt – reporting, the Paulick Report wrote about how this would be Bucks’ last race, with her breeder having made arrangements for a “retirement” on his farm. Dr. Mike Chovanes: “I just can’t stand it when they say ‘one more race’ for a horse like Bucks Some. We had a blanket made for her and invited all her former trainers over for drinks to celebrate. And then this happened.”

You, sir, are as guilty as the bastard Velazquez. You made her for the express purpose of to sell her for profit – and by selling her for the horse races you immediately endanger her.

One last, final note: the fatal “spill” – as the equally dense, delusional, morally bankrupt number announcer called it – was cut from the Parx replay. Cowards.
