Shanghai-Derde placed Alexander Zverev lost Arthur Rindernech 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his opening match in the Shanghai Masters on Monday.

Zverev, the player with the highest ranked in the draw, looked in control after taking the first set but struggled for the rest of the game and could not break the serve again. Rinder Knech received a break in the second set and two in the third to seal the victory in more than two hours.

He also beat Zverev in five sets in the first round in Wimbledon this year.

Rinder Knech, 30, has a career-best 23 victories in 2025 and is in the fourth round during a Masters 1000 event for the third time.

He will then play Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier Alex de Minaur beat Kamil Majchrzak 6-1, 7-5 in the seventh place in moist conditions for his tour leader 36th victory over hard courts this year.

The Minaur, 26, Brak Majchr bags serve five times to reach his seventh Masters 1000 fourth round of the season. Two of the breaks came after he dropped in the second set after he fell to training 4-3.

“I came in knowing this week how difficult the circumstances would be,” said the Minaur. “So the mentality is ultimately survival, finding ways and preparing for fighting every time you get onto the field. There is no such thing as easy matches, especially in these circumstances, so I am happy that I could compose myself in the second set, get the break back and finish it in two. If we had gone in a third, it would be very physical.”

The minaur will then be confronted with Nuno Borges, who defeated Shang Juncheng with 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. Another victory for the Minaur would achieve him for the first time in a season of 50 victories at tour level.

Felix Auger-Aliasassime converted three of the four breaking points to beat Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-5. The 12th placed Auger-Aliassy was helped by a Baljon bond at his feet after he slipped in the second set. He is 10-2 in August, with both defeats against Jannik Sinner. Auger-Aliassime will then be confronted with the eighth placed Lorenzo Musetti, who defeated colleague Italian Luciano Darderi 7-5, 7-6 (1).

Sinner, the title defender, stood on Sunday 7-6 (3), 5-7, 2-3 against Tallon Griekspoor when he withdrew from the game because of cramps.

Top ranked Carlos Alcaraz, who won the Japanese open last week, is not in Shanghai due to minor disorders.

The American student Ten defeated Cameron Norrie 7-6 (4), 6-3.
