Congress party leaders in Shivamogga held a protest on January 23 urging the President of India to recall Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot for refusing to deliver the speech prepared by the state government during the joint legislature.

Under the banner of Shivamogga City Youth Congress, the party’s leaders and workers gathered in front of the statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar at the Shivamogga City Corporation office and raised slogans against the governor. The leaders alleged that the governor, who was the custodian of the Constitution, had acted contrary to the Constitution. Refusing to deliver the speech, citing comments about the central government, was unacceptable, they said. “The governor should have upheld the dignity of the House by delivering the speech. His act created a commotion in the House,” one of the protesters said.

KPCC secretary N. Ramesh, party leaders HC Yogesh, Ramesh Heggade and Youth Congress district president Harshit Gowda submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India to the Deputy Commissioner. They urged the president to recall the governor.
