Baltimore – Undoubtedly the most important unit that the Yankees have to go straight to October has put together a mainly encouraging day on Sunday.
Six relievers combined to pitch 4 ²/₃ scoreless innings, where the orioles were kept at a distance until the Yankees eventually erupted in the 10th inning for a 7-1 win over Camden Yards.
In the relief of Cam Schlittler in a 1-1 match, Lefty Tim Hill received the last two of the sixth inning and then withdrew another left-handed batter to lead the seventh.
Fernando Cruz made one out to set up a few runners, forcing Luke Weaver in the game to finally let Jackson Holliday land and let the bases full.
Devin Williams hit the side in the eighth against the heart of the Order-when Aaron Boone used him the most during this 10-day, 10-game journey and he responded by striking nine about five scoreless innings while he only allowed two hits and did not walk.
And then David Bednar worked around a walk in the ninth to send the game to extras, where Camilo Doval loaded the bases into the bottom of the 10th to close it.
“Hopefully keep stacking for days,” said Boone. “They were all really good today. Timmy did his thing, went out and got the main runner, Cruz does just enough to pass it on, and weave it again today. Devin was light again and so it was a bit interesting there in it [10th]But I thought Camilo threw the ball well.
“They are all able to see there. It is good to see that they put together some good trips.”
In the four-game series against the Orioles, the Yankees Bullpen combined to give only one point over 11 ¹/₃ innings.
José Caballero seemed to have pain after he had hit the fifth inning, bent forward and then went the stairs to the clubhouse.
But he came up again to play Shortstop in the bottom of the frame and stayed in the rest of the game while he adds a single and a double.
“He has just had to deal with a finger that makes him up, really in recent months,” said Boone. “So every now and then in a swing, bother him.”
Comes from the Friday of Monday, the Yankees are set to start Luis Gil on Tuesday against the White Sox and Max Fried on Wednesday.
They will leave on Thursday as TBD for the time being. It would be Will Warren’s turn, but the Yankees could also reduce Carlos Rodón to normal peace, which would give him an extra day on his way to a likely game 2-start in the Wild-Card series.
