Chicago – The Mets and Red Sox made waves this week by calling young pitchers to help with their play -off pushes.
The Yankees played that card last month with Cam Schlittler.
What the Right-Hander Fireballing does has become the norm.
Schlittler concluded another opposite line-up, this time and this time only gave up one point over six innings with eight strikeouts before the Yankees defeated the White Sox 5-3 in 11 innings on Saturday night.
The 24-year-old Rookie only allowed four hits, of which only two left the Infield, while he continues to argue in October for a rotation place.
“He is a beast,” said Catcher Austin Wells. “He goes outside and it doesn’t matter who is on the record, he goes outside and throws his fields and gives us outs.”
Schlittler has an ERA of 2.61 due to its first nine main class start, with 54 strikeouts over 48 ¹/₃ innings.
He has completed at least six innings in each of his last three starts and has only specified one point about 18 ²/₃ innings with 24 strikeouts.
“It takes time to really get that feeling, so at every start I certainly feel more comfortable, [but] Don’t try to be too comfortable, “said Schlittler, who was selected 11 picks after the latest Mets -Werder, Jonah Tong, in the seventh round of the 2022 design.
“Just understand that I can go outside and have faith in myself and do what I have to do for six innings.”
Along the way Schlittler seemed to avoid a bullet, if not the ball.
He took a 102.1 MPH Comebacker from his right forearm in the fifth inning – it usually got the muscle, said Aaron Boone manager – but after throwing two warm -up fields, he remained in the game.
“I didn’t really feel it there, so I wasn’t really worried,” said Schlittler, who just expects to have a bruise of it. “I think it gave me the extra adrenaline that I was looking for. No worries at all.”
The White Sox does not roll out exactly the most frightening line-up, but Schlittler has usually come through while he only gives an RBI single to ex-Yinkee Mike Tauchman in the fifth inning.
Schlittler’s High-90S Fastball was not as sharp as it has been about a career-highest 100 throws, but he was doing well with a particularly effective cutter next to his curveball.
“Being able to get that cutter back there, things certainly made things a little easier for me,” he said.
