Yana Santos has had a lot of bad luck with opponents in the UFC not making their contractual weight limits. There was even an instance where an opponent missed the mark on the scales, but pressure was reportedly put on Santos from the promotion to keep the fight intact. This was expressed by the fighter himself, with Santos recently mentioning this anecdote MMA fighting.
Santos delves into her experiences feeling that she previously had to agree to the promotion’s demands, despite her opponent being the one who did not fulfill her end of the bargain in this regard, Santos said [via MMA Fighting],
“A few fights ago, when my opponent missed a lot of weight and we were thinking should we take the fight or not, UFC made it very clear that I am the person who will be punished if I refuse to fight. So I don’t get paid, I have a chance to get cut and all these things. It’s like the opponent who missed that weight is [not] is going to have a problem. It’s me who has problems. So I can’t see that as an option. It is what it is. If I want to keep my job, I will have to fight.”
Yana Santos saw another opponent fail on the scales at UFC 320
Yana Santos didn’t mention which fight she was specifically talking about in the quote above. But the fact that there are multiple examples to choose from paints a picture. For Santos, four of the seven opponents carded in her latest round of fight bookings failed to deliver on the scale that was pre-agreed.
The most recent example of this came from last weekend’s proceedings, when Macy Chiasson weighed 137.5 pounds prior to her fight with Santos, and the former had to forfeit 25 percent of their fight fees for the miss. Santos finally defeated Chiasson on points on Saturday, October 4. The winner requested an apology related to the weight loss, with Santos also saying that the apology did not come from Chiasson or anyone on her team.
Friday’s UFC 320 frustrations for Santos inspired her to call for harsher punishments for fighters who fail to fulfill this part of their professional obligations. The 35-year-old has missed a number of opponents so egregiously that he almost finds himself in a different division, as Chelsea knocked Chandler at 141 pounds for their contracted bantamweight fight last year.
