All 19 of the memorial plaques were stolen from a memorial in Hobart in the First World War.

Last week, councilors noted the bronze plaques to commemorate soldiers who died during the First World War missing.

Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue President John Wadsley said he was “transformed” when he heard that they had recovered this weekend.

“They each represent an individual soldier or a nurse and that’s why we were stripped by it [the plaques being stolen]”

Said Wadsley.

Tasmania Police Inspector Andrew Keen said that a member of the audience told the police on Sunday that they found the plaques in a bag near the births, dead and marriages register in Rosny Park on the eastern coast of Hobart.

Inspector Keen said that a line of research was for the police or the person who reported the plaques was the perpetrator.

“That is certainly a lead that we will follow – that the person has panicked or changed his mind,” he said.

“We are just very happy that we can bring them back to the community.”

Initially it was reported that at least 21 plaques had been stolen, but inspector Keen said on Monday that figure was 19.

Mr. Wadsley said that some of the plaques were damaged and had to be replaced.

He said it would cost around $ 600 to throw a new plaque, but the scrap value of the plaques would be between $ 5 and $ 7.

“I think the people who did this realized they [the plaques] are basically worthless, but they represent so much more to the families.“

Mr. Wadsley said it will take months to restore all plaques.

‘We have a lot of other work [to do] To see how we can ensure that the Avenue stays safe. “

The police are still calling for more information and for everyone who saw someone with a Hessian bag near the Queens domain or on the eastern coast to come forward.
