The name of Sidney Crosby has become a hot topic, this season outside the season, with trade rumors that come up and then shot by the NHL -Superster. Crosby says he wants to stay with the Pittsburgh penguins, but that does not mean that analysts and columnists do not continue to talk about trade opportunities.
For example, Michael Russo of the Athletic recently eliminated how realistic a Crosby trade could be for every NHL team. Excluding different teams as even remotely achievable options, there were a few on his list that were labeled ‘strong possibilities’.
Strong possibilities for a Crosby trade
Russo identifies the Florida Panthers and Montreal Canadiens as the two teams with the clearest paths and means to acquire Crosby.
Florida is always active and their competitive window is wide open, with the chance of this season to Thrakeat. If Crosby wants to chase another Stanley Cup, the Panthers are a natural fit and give him the best opportunities. There would be a salary cap juggling that should happen, but the Panthers never count.
Meanwhile, Montreal offers a fairy tale scenario for No. 87, which grew up a fan of Canadiens. The Habs have a lot of cap -space, the desire to add Crosby when he is open to it, and the idea that he could live his boy’s dream, seems too good to overlook.
The Crosby Maybes
Teams such as the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild are also in the conversation, but mentioned as Maybes.
Van de Maybes offers Colorado the most attractive option with Nathan Mackinnon on the Roster. They are a high-end team with a strong chance to make the play-offs. Mackinnon is good friends with Crosby and there has always been an underlying theory that these two may want to play together at some point.
The Crosby Light Opportunities
Some playoff hopeful and legitimate cup contenders, including the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets, can make theoretical mings. In any case, however, Russo notes that there are obstacles for every team to overcome. Most were related to the salary cap or gridfits.
In no way in Crosby
Various clubs, including Boston, Chicago, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington, San Jose and Utah, were categorized by Russo as non-starters. These were teams that rebuild or offer nothing more than being able to offer the penguins on this point in Crosby’s career. There would be no reason for him to leave Pittsburgh to become a member of these franchises.
At the end of the day, Crosby probably doesn’t go anywhere. And if he decided that an exchange was on the table, only a few teams would cause a strong fit.
