Wrexham made a big impression in the transfer market during their first spell as a Championship club.
The Red Dragons have big ambitions and are not afraid to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to achieving their goals. Nathan Broadhead was one of the most expensive signings and high wages are being paid for established professionals like Conor Coady Kieffer Moore.
However, the North Welsh side also have plans to break into the European market. Now a report of it Football insider has claimed that one man firmly on the Wrexham radar is striker Sidiki Cherif, who plays in France for Ligue 1 side Angers SCO.
They state that Cherif has been monitored several times by club scouts and that there is interest in a deal. However, Wrexham face an uphill battle to secure such a deal, with the 18-year-old’s emergence justifying a £17m valuation and interest from Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham.
Who is Wrexham rumored to be targeting Sidiki Cherif?
Cherif has been with current club Angers since 2019, progressing through the youth ranks and breaking into the senior set-up. He scored 18 goals in 23 games for the U19s to put people first.
The Frenchman has already acquired a decent level of senior experience, but it was a run at the end of October that announced him as a major prospect. Cherif scored in three consecutive matches, against UEFA Champions League clubs AS Monaco and Marseille, as well as Lorient.
Cherif mainly plays as a striker or left winger. He is a strong forward at 185 meters tall and has featured in nine of Angers’ 13 Ligue 1 matches this season.
The rumored Wrexham target is under contract until 2028. It means there is no pressure to raise money, but if a big bid comes along, his club is well placed to demand a healthy transfer fee.
Could Wrexham really sign Sidiki Cherif?
Cherif is emerging as a top prospect. It would be a notable move for Wrexham in the European market to get him.
However, in the position the Red Dragons find themselves in, it makes little sense to spend such a high fee on a player who still has a lot to develop. For that money, they could sign a more ready-made star who can come in and make an immediate impact; something Cherif might struggle with at his age and inexperience.
Sidiki Cherif’s Angers record
It is an asset that is much more suitable for the Premier League clubs. They can afford to make big investments in the future, when £17m of an unknown amount is simply an unnecessary risk for a Championship club.
Wrexham would be wise to start investing in these younger players, who they can develop and sell for big profits. However, it would be unwise to spend that much on it, and it feels unlikely.
