Wrexham had a considerable setback after one of their most important players had been taken to the hospital for scans after a pre-season-friendly. The Red Dragons are currently in Australia and are preparing for their first season in the championship in 43 years.

Midfielder Ollie Rathbone sustained an ankle injury during the first half of the 2-1 loss of Wrexham for Sydney FC on Tuesday morning. The 28-year-old seemed to have serious pain when he was assisted by club medics by club medics.

Manager Phil Parkinson confirmed after the game that he had been taken to the hospital for an X -ray. The former Sunderland and Bolton boss told the club’s media team that the incident had taken the teammates of Rathbone about him.

He said: “We really hope for him and it is a very quiet clothing room there, because we are worried about Ollie. It didn’t look so bad from an incident when it happened, but the Zwolle immediately went up in the dressing room and KEV (Mulholland, Club Physio) went to the hospital with him. We just have to keep our fingers crossed.”

Rathbone was crowned Wrexham’s player of the season last term and even made comparisons with Lionel Messi from a teammate when he helped them secure automatic promotion from League One. He yielded eight goals in 41 league matches after switching from Rotherham United last August for a club record costs at the time, which it was believed to be around £ 500,000.

Although the seriousness of his injury is currently unknown, every time -out for Rathbone would be a big blow to the club of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney while preparing for life in the second layer. Wrexham starts their campaign away in Southampton on August 9 after the saints were banned from the Premier League in April.

Rathbone expressed his excitement about participation in the Down Under Tour of the North Wales side before the team left last week.

“This is what is special to being part of this club,” said the ex-manchester United Academy player The leader. “Not only being part of the community and working with the staff and the players, but to get these kinds of opportunities.

“There are not many clubs, especially in the football competition, which get a chance like this, so I am incredibly grateful. I am understood in the previous season Tenerife and Croatia. I am very excited to go there and experience it.

“It is squeezing yourself, it is incredible to get the chance to do this. As a player it is therefore so great to be here at the moment. It is a club that is really around and you can really experience special things.”

Wrexham initially took the lead in their friendly against Sydney when one of the players of the A-League side unintentionally diverted a James McClean free kick in his own goal. Alexandar Popovic raised the score for the hosts shortly before the break.

Sydney sealed their comeback in the second half with a brilliant attempt by the younger Joe Lacey, who hit just outside the penalty area. The competition in Allianz Stadium attracted a crowd of more than 40,000 spectators.

The result was far away from Wrexham’s first match against Melbourne Victory last week, where they won a comfortable 3-0 win. Wrexham closes their tour on Saturday with a final game in New Zealand against Wellington Phoenix.
