WPL 2026: Defending seven in the last over felt like stealing the game, says Ashleigh Gardner

Captain of Gujarat Giants Women Ashleigh Gardner said her team stole the match after a thrilling win over Delhi Capitals Women. GG Women posted a huge total of 209 runs, putting pressure on DC Women. Delhi needed 60 runs from the last four overs with a required run rate of 15 per over, and Laura Wolvaardt almost pulled off a remarkable chase.

DC Women needed seven runs to win in the last over but Gujarat Giants held their nerve to win the match by four runs in a dramatic finish. Gardner said the match remained evenly balanced throughout, but felt her side were comfortable in key moments. She also noted that Indian deliveries can be tricky and emphasized that matches are not really over until the last ball is bowled.

“Yeah, it’s one of those games that was on the line pretty much the whole time. And sure, [with] 60 [needed] After four overs I think in the past you would probably be more comfortable as a bowling side. But we know here in India, with the wickets and the way the batters hit the ball, you never really get out,” Gardner said in the post-match presentation.

“To be able to defend seven in the last over, I felt like we stole that match. But I think these are the matches that give a lot of confidence in the dressing room and a lot of belief that we can win from any position,” she added.

Proud of the way they fought back: Rodrigues

Captain of Delhi Capitals Women Rodrogue said she was proud of the way her team fought back twice in the match. DC lost top scorer Lizelle Lee after scoring 86 runs, but Wolvaardt’s explosive 77 from just 38 balls almost took them over the finish line.

“I think I’m very proud of the girls [with] the way they fight back. Even when we bowled in our first innings, I think the way Sophie Devine went, she put a lot of pressure on us. But the way Nandani [Sharma] And [Sree] Charani bowled, I think they fought back really well,” Rodrigues said.

“And I couldn’t have been prouder of the belief this team showed in this chase because at one point we needed 15 runs per over. But to get to the last over where we only need seven more, I don’t think I could have been prouder. Yes, it’s a tough pill to swallow, but there are a lot of positives to take from here,” she added.
