Everton’s 4-2 defeat to Brentford told a story that has become quite familiar in the inaugural season of the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
After an early setback by the visiting talisman, Igor Thiago, the Blues struggled to build much momentum in the match as the away side claimed a deserved three points and Merseyside were likely left wondering how they failed to score more than four goals.
In eleven home games in the league this season, the Toffees have gone behind in five of them and have only managed to overturn a deficit once – this was their 2-1 comeback win against Crystal Palace.
Since the win against the South London team, on the four other occasions that David Moyes’ side have gone behind, they have ultimately lost the match.
With the exception of the pre-Christmas match against Arsenal, the games against Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Brentford highlighted a weak Everton team who showed little resilience and struggled against their opponents when they fell behind early.
These defeats show that Hill Dickinson Stadium has not been a fortress for the Blues. Although some suggest the stadium contributed to this, the dying days of Goodison Park also saw numerous shock home defeats.
Regardless, wherever Everton play, supporters should never see the same performances as they have seen in several home games this season.
Everton should think twice before considering replacing David Moyes
While the above statistic is bleak, from a holistic view of the club, they are moving in the right direction, and Moyes is the right man for the job at the moment.
It should be noted that the Irons also suffered painful defeats in the Scot’s final season at West Ham United, 2023-2024. These included an FA Cup third round elimination against Bristol City and a 6-0 humiliation at home to Arsenal.
These two losses and more damaging results were used in the case to sack Moyes, even though his side finished ninth in the Premier League. But the East London side have declined since then.
Concerns will remain over the poor home record, but any suggestion that the 62-year-old is not the right man to manage Everton at the moment should be treated with caution. West Ham’s current affairs show what a post-Moyes future could lead to…

But how do you distinguish Moyes’ signings from the DoF with whom he was reportedly at odds?Same as our current situation, albeit with a committee and no DoF.

It would be interesting to take a look at Moyes’ signings at West Ham, to see who has worked and who hasn’t during his tenure.
