World Series game 6 thread: Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs. Kevin Gausman

For the first time since 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays are on the cusp of a World Series title. After winning two of three in Los Angeles, the Blue Jays now have a chance to clinch the title with a win at home in Game 6 of the series.

The Los Angeles Dodgers offense has been stagnant, with the obvious exception of Shohei Ohtani. Don’t count them out for this game, though, as they’ll be hoping for another incredible performance from Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Japanese star was nothing less than excellent this postseason, winning 3-1 with an ERA of 1.57. In his last two starts, Yamamoto has fired complete games, allowing just two runs on seven hits with 15 strikeouts against just one walk. He’s been a workhorse and given the state of the Dodgers’ bullpen, it’s within the realm of possibility that he goes another nine innings. In his last start during Game 2, Yamamoto allowed just one run on four hits in his complete game win with eight strikeouts with no walks.

The Blue Jays are hoping Colorado product Kevin Gausman has the right stuff to take on the Dodgers again. Gausman was on the losing end of his matchup with Yamamoto last time out, but he still had a great start in Game 2. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits, including two home runs. He recorded six strikeouts with no walks. Gausman has been incredibly consistent in the postseason, working at least five innings in each of his starts and limiting damage. Those three runs in his last start were the most he had given up in a playoff appearance this year. Avoiding walks was key last time out, and he’ll need to continue that trend and not provide an inch of help to the Dodgers lineup as the Blue Jays try to end the series.
