Basketball Australia is pleased to announce the selected athletes to attend the IWBF 3×3 World Championship 2025, from 1-3 August in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The tournament is organized by the International Rolstoir Basketball Federation and marks the very first 3×3 World Cup for wheelchair basketball and will contain 23 teams from all over the world, with 15 men’s teams and 8 women who compete for the title.

Australia will represent both men and women both, with strong line -ups and high expectations of the tournament.

Head coach Rob Pike believes that both squadrons are well positioned to make a deep run.

“The women are a well -balanced unity of good quality, everyone is a threat,” said Pike.

“The goal for them is to come together as a team and to work on specific skills that will really make us competitive against all opponents.”

In the men’s competition, Australia was drawn in Pool B next to Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Kenya and Canada.

“The core of the men’s team comes from our Gold Medal winning squad of the Commonwealth games, with the addition of Tomas Klein,” said Pike.

“It is a mid-point line-up where everyone is interchangeable. That is the power of this team; there are no weak links.”

“Canada and Portugal are dangerous, but with 3×3 every team can be heavy and we don’t want to take a team lightly.”

In the ladies’ stretching, Australia will compete in Pool A with South Africa, Great -Britain and Switzerland.

“Great -Britain has several Paralympians in their setup, and they are a good team, but I think we fit well against them. The Swiss are the dark horse and South Africa when the host country will bring passion. We are ready.”

The best artists from the men’s pool go on to the knockout rounds, while the top two ladies teams in each group continue to the semi-final.

Pike said that last month’s Asia Oceania Cup turned out to be vital.

“The Asia Oceania Cup gave us a taste of what international 3×3 basketball looks like, the intensity, the speed, the aggression. We are better for it.”

As the excitement builds for the world championship, Pike is convinced that both Australian teams are ready to take on the challenge.

“We are pleased to play in the very first 3×3 wheelchair basketball world cup. I believe we have two very good, exciting teams – teams that Australia should find out and follow, you will not be disappointed.”
