Assistant commissioner Fitzgerald said that officers were initially sent to the area in the midst of reports of a man armed with a machete.

The relationship between the armed man, the driver and her passenger is still unclear, said Assistant Commissioner Fitzgerald.

She said she believed that the officer who fired his gun reacted in accordance with his training.

“The police members are trained to respond in a certain way and that is what happened,” she said.

She said that the officer had “extreme happiness”, he was not injured.

Assistant commissioner Fitzgerald said that the couple was known in the car with the police and a car drove with alleged stolen South Australian number plates.

A crime scene remains in the South Melbourne area around Park Street and researchers will probably go through all night.

Witnesses have reported that they have parked several police and ambulance vehicles in the area at the time of the incident.

The machete-waving man was taken to the hospital for observation.
