Woman fatally shot by ICE in Minneapolis identified, officials spar over cause of shooting

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in her car in Minneapolis, according to local and federal officials, amid the Trump administration’s latest immigration policy.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected the Trump administration’s claim that the officer shot in self-defense, saying the video of the shooting directly contradicted what he called the administration’s “garbage narrative.”
“They are already trying to frame this as an action in self-defense,” a visibly angry Frey said at a news conference. “Now that I’ve seen the video myself, I want to tell everyone straight: that’s nonsense.”
Frey blamed federal immigration agents for sowing chaos in the city, telling ICE: “Get the f–k out of Minneapolis.”

He also called on residents to remain calm.

The shooting drew hundreds of protesters to the streets near the crime scene, some of whom were met by heavily armed federal agents wearing gas masks and reportedly firing chemical irritants.
The Minnesota City Council identified the dead woman as Renee Nicole Good and said she was “caring for her neighbors this morning and today her life was taken by the federal government.” The council statement also demanded that ICE leave the city immediately.
The police chief said Good was not a target of immigration operations.

U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, said on X the Good she was a U.S. citizen, while Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose district includes Minneapolis, said she was a “legal observer.”

Government officials say the officer fired defensively

Kristi Noem, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, told a news conference that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were responding to a vehicle stuck in the snow when they were accosted by a “crowd of agitators.”
One of the protesters, later identified as Good, followed officers all day, Noem said. Good blocked their vehicle and refused orders to get out of the way, she said.
“She then proceeded to arm her vehicle and attempted to run over a law enforcement officer,” Noem told a news conference, saying the car struck the officer.
She characterized that as domestic terrorism and said the act is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). State officials said they would launch their own investigation.

Earlier, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin called Good a “violent rioter” and said the officer who killed her saved “his own life and the lives of his fellow officers.”

“The alleged perpetrator was struck and died,” McLaughlin wrote on X. “The ICE officers who were injured are expected to make a full recovery.”

Trump also posted on his Truth Social platform, saying he had watched a clip of the incident.
“The reason these incidents are happening is because the radical left threatens, attacks and targets our law enforcement and ICE agents on a daily basis.” he claimed.

Trump’s opponents called for protests in several U.S. cities, raising the risk that the killing could become a national flashpoint over his deployment of federal officers in Democratic-run cities and states.

Videos of the shooting

Videos of the shooting, posted on social media and verified by Reuters news agency, cast doubt on the government’s narrative.
A widely shared video shows a maroon Honda SUV partially blocking a road. As the clip begins, the driver moves forward and then stops to let another car pass.
The driver then appears, with the window open, to gesture to an approaching pick-up to drive on as well.

Instead, the truck stops and two officers get out and approach the vehicle on foot. As one of the officers orders the driver out of the SUV and grabs the door handle, the vehicle reverses briefly and a third officer approaches the front of the car from the passenger side.

The driver then moves forward and turns the wheels to the right, as if he wants to drive down the street, away from the officers. The officer in front of the car draws his weapon, steps back and fires, bringing the left front bumper close to his legs.

He fires three shots, at least one shot after the car’s front bumper has already passed him.
The video does not indicate whether the car made contact with the officer, who remained on his feet during the encounter.
After the shots are fired, the car accelerates onto the street and crashes into parked cars and a utility pole.
