According to Michael Scotto van HoopshypeThe Minnesota Timberwolves have signed Bones Hyland for a contract. Although Hyland has solid skills, the move is not very logical for the wolves, because they already have Rob Dillingham. And if Minnesota wants Dillingham to reach its full potential, they must be fully focused on him.
Mike Conley has run for the Wolves in recent years and helps Anthony Edwards on his two runs to the Western Conference Finals. But while they look to find his final replacement, Dillingham can be ready to take a leap. Yet for some reason they decided to take a very similar player on board.
It is not logical.
Why would Wolves Bones not signed Hyland?
In theory, Hyland is an energetic, score-first guard who can offer a nice blow from the bank. In reality, he was unable to comply with one of the teams who have taken him in the early stages of his career.
He started his career before he was traded to De La Clippers halfway through his second -year season after an impressive Rookie campaign. However, he only spent a season there and a bit there before he continued to the wolves, who decided to bring him back (at least for a training camp).
In the course of his four seasons in the NBA, the minutes of Hyland are slowly tapped down, just like his efficiency, despite a bounce back year of three last season.
Last year Hyland succeeded in 24 performances with the Clippers and Wolves only 9.9 minutes per match. He on average 6.2 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists during the shooting of 39.8% from the field and 39/0% of deep range.
Unfortunately for Hyland, his lean frame and smaller shape make it more difficult for him to keep up with the defensive end, just like Dillingham. In fact, he and Dillingham are almost the same archetype of the player, although the latter is currently upside down in his career.
Minnesota invested in Dillingham on the first night in 2024, and he should be the center of their efforts on the waiting position in terms of development, especially with Conley there in age (for an NBA player).
Hyland is a good player to bring on board, but making him a little more than a training campman can cut in the development of Dillingham. And that is not something that the wolves would like to mess with.
