The career of Cooper Flagg is managed by a former science teacher of the sixth grade of 25 years.

His mother, Kelly Flagg, added brand manager to her CV when the Dallas Mavericks selected the 6-foot-9 Duke product with the number 1 general choice in the NBA design of April.

It is something that she is still processing, along with a whirlwind move to Texas to support Cooper in his career after 40 years in her hometown Newport, Maine.

In just a short time, she went from the few well-known mother of three basketball stars in high school-Hunter, Cooper and Ace Flagg-to help helping the career of one of the more hyped NBA prospects in recent memory.

“I am now a kind of career of Cooper, so to speak,” said Kelly de Post, spoke on behalf of her partnership with Dr. Scholl’sA shoe brand that brings real mothers to the attention. “I am the intermediary between the desk and the brand partners and everything. So I am a kind of his brand manager.

“And that keeps me very busy, and I am still a mother and plays the mother role … so I just try to tackle the daily things.

“I taught for 25 years in the sixth grade and I retired two years ago to move to Florida to be with Cooper and [his twin brother] ACE to support them – and what went with all the opportunities they got. So we just felt that it was logical for us to be near them. And I continued in that role for the past two years. “

Kelly, who taught her three sons as students, is still figuring out what her new normally looks like.

For example, she hurried home to her new residence in Dallas to make this interview because she was shopping for groceries for Cooper’s apartment.

Balancing are mom-aged

Kelly was candid about juggling with her role in Cooper’s career and mother are for the 18-year-old basketball phenomenon.

“I think I am usually just a mother, and I try to choose the times in which we have real conversations about business things,” she said. ‘So I will say:’ Can you give me five minutes? I have to go through the schedule with you and I need you to make some decisions about some things. ‘

“I don’t try to flood him constantly with that stature … I go through an agenda, but try to keep it quickly and short because he is 18 and his attention span is still quite short for that kind of stern.

“The biggest thing is that he makes all decisions, and that is important for his father [Ralph Flagg] And I that this is his business and he runs the show. We don’t want to make decisions for him that are not things he wants to do. So we always run things through him, and I think that is really important. I think that parents can sometimes get into trouble where they make all the decisions and on the road, there can be a resort. And I never want that is the case. “

Kelly said she is ready for the task of balancing Cooper’s NBA games and Ace’s College Games this fall.

‘We have a rent [home] In Maine in the winter so we can go back and forth and catch as many games as possible from Ace and check in with Hunter, “she said.

She is not in the spotlight

Kelly said she still comes up with the new attention, even when she ends up from her own brand deals, such as Dr. Scholl.

“It’s a lot … everyone always asks me:” How are you doing everything? ” And to be honest, I don’t have time to even process what we have experienced in recent months, because there is so much to us so quickly that it is a kind of whirlwind, “said Kelly.

“But as far as I am concerned, I have always been a busy mother. I have just been busy in different ways … As far as I am in the spotlight, I don’t really have the feeling that I am in it – or I am not trying to be in the spotlight. It is not something that I necessarily pursue.

Kelly attracted some attention for a viral celebration – seemed to scream “on his F – King Head” after a flagg dunk when he led Duke to a victory over rival North Carolina in March.

She laughed to be an idea of being more influenced. Instead, Kelly prefers Mama, whose goal is to help other mothers in similar positions.

“I think there are many people who appreciate that and many mothers who see a lot of themselves in me and a kind of my journey and what I do,” she said. “I am just a normal, ordinary mother who happens to have children who are really good at sport, and luckily people excel and got a much larger spotlight.”

“I lived all my life in Newport, Maine until two years ago and for 40 years. So I will not tell you exactly how old I am, but that is close enough,” said Kelly. “And if you had told me five or six years ago that I would live in Dallas or move to Florida, I would have thought that you were crazy.

“So it’s funny how life has changed in a very short time.”
