Play enough golf in Florida and you come to learn how much of it is: flat fairways, condos, cart paths of the Palm, Cart paths, repeat. The stereotypes are stubborn for a reason. But they don’t keep waving on Cabot Citrus Farms.
Cabot Citrus Farms, a destination resort at the Nature Coast in Florida, a region that is historically rich in orange bushes, sits on a rolling, sandscarf of pine, palmettos and moss -leaned oak. The atmosphere is luxurious but modest. The facilities are modern, but the building has a non -hurried, Throwback Air. And The Golf is a mix of classical and contemporary, a showcase of the game in all its beauty and variety, in contrast to everyone in the Sunshine State.

Anchoring everything are four courses, two of which are two and the Karoo-18-hole layouts that offer a compelling study in contrasts. De Roost is more traditional in inspiration. A rare collaboration of three architects of different companies (Mike Nuzz, Kyle Franz and Rod Whitman, with input from the former architecture editor of Golf Ran Morrissett), it moves light on a lilt landscape, with wide, bouncy courses and rustic bunkering that the sandy work of Alister Mackenzie does. The Karoo is something of a wilder brother or sister, cut by sand waste and bushes, with heavy, hilly fairways that shots shots in all directions and huge, dramatically shaped greens. Frannz, who designed it solo, describes it as ‘adventurous wave’.
If the Roost and the Karoo are all the golf you can eat, the squeeze and the wcege serve the game in bite -sized portions. Both are short courses-the first a charming, 10-hole collection of par-3s and par-4s, the latter a 19-hole par-3 course that is demanding for a bet-settling competition, but just as well suited for a bare foot round with cocktails in the hand. Just like the state-of-the-practice exercise range and the short game area, the WIG is also illuminated for nocturnal play.
As the name suggests, Cabot Citrus Farms is part of the Cabot Portfolio, a collection of golf and real estate developments that was born in Nova Scotia, with Cabot Cape Breton, and has since been expanded from Canada to the Caribbean, Scotland and then. In accordance with its brand, Citrus Farms is abundant in extras outside the track. Eating options run the range of farm-to-table kitchen in Grange Hall, a middle point restaurant that is open for breakfast lunch and dinner, to wood-fired pizzas on the veranda, an outdoor hangout in a peak on the site, set up with picnic tables and adirondack chairs.
In the meantime, the surrounding house also invites a range of non-golf activities: walking, cycling, skeet shooting, archery, ax throwing, bass fishing and further, although there is no local rule to only kick back with friends about drinks.
