Winnipeg Jets prospect Kevin He made OHL blockbuster trade

A trade where the Winnipeg Jets? Well, but it’s one of their prospects in the OHL. Kevin He, the now former captain of the Niagara IceDogs, has been traded to the Flint Firebirds along with defenseman Darcy Dewachter, a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick in exchange for forward Chase Hull and a hefty package of seven draft picks.

Full trading details:

Firebirds received:

  • Kevin He (F)

  • Darcy Dewachter (D)

  • 2029 2nd round pick

  • 2026 4th round pick

Receive IceDogs:

  • Chase hull (V)

  • Two 2026 second-round picks

  • 2027 3rd round pick

  • 2028 3rd round pick

  • 2029 3rd round pick

  • 2028 4th round pick

  • 2027, 6th round pick

He, 19, is in his fourth and final OHL season and had spent his entire junior career at Niagara prior to the deal. Through 28 games this season with the IceDogs, the former captain scored 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points. Overall, he has scored 102 goals and 193 points in 220 OHL regular season games.

We also saw him get some NHL preseason action with the Jets this year, where he looked fast and promising, an encouraging sign for his future within the Jets organization.

“An elite engine, that’s the source of He’s success. It powers every part of his game, including his non-stop presence in the forward line, his knack for stealing the puck at the blue line and explosive open-ice hits. It’s also the way he generates offense. He burns past defenders with powerful strides to get to the net, dropping the shoulder when necessary,” he said. Elite Prospects 2024 NHL Draft Guide.

That assessment feels just right. He is fast, and that speed makes him dangerous, especially up front. While he isn’t a huge presence at just 6-foot-4, he isn’t shy about throwing the body, which only adds another layer to the youth game.

It’s clear that Flint is going all-in this season. Acquiring a player in his final OHL year and paying such a price to do so signals a push for a deep playoff run. This is truly an “all-in” move, and one that should make the Firebirds a more difficult team to face.
