The deadline for Windows 10 End of Life is almost in front of us. Next month, on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop support for Windows 10, which means that there are no more function or security updates for the operating system.
If you are performing a Windows 10 -PC and you have not thought much about your options yet, you must start this – and quickly. In just over a few weeks, the deadline will be here and the last official security update will be sent for Windows 10.
So what are your choices at the moment? That is what I will discuss in this article, taking into account a few options: ensuring that you cannot upgrade Windows 11 (it is worth checking one thing, assuming you would switch to the newer operating system, if you could), to make free updates for another year – and finally to stay on Windows 10 without support.
The latter is really not recommended, and I will make it clear why that is the case when we come that option, but it is still a (dangerous) path that some people might consider.
Check if you can certainly not upgrade to Windows 11
First, you can first hate the idea of Windows 11 and do not want to upgrade at all – in that case, stop reading this part now and go to the next part. Assuming, however, if possible you would upgrade to Windows 11, but you cannot because your PC does not have the System requirements, then it is worth checking one thing.
While Windows update, or the PC -Health control App, you can tell that you cannot upgrade to Windows 11 because your system does not meet the requirements of having TPM 2.0, that may not be true. It is possible that your computer has this security function, but it is simply not switched on. In some cases you can enable TPM 2.0 in the BIOS, and you should definitely check – follow this explanation for this.
If you can switch on TPM 2.0, you must now (hopefully) be able to upgrade to Windows 11 before the support for Windows 10 is performed. Otherwise you will continue to explore the other options below.
At the last minute, Microsoft changed its range of an extra free support year for Windows 10 and removes all the strings for those who live in Europe.
If that includes, you only have to go to Windows Update, where you should see a link to sign up for extensive security updates just below the option to check for updates. Click on the ‘Now register’ button and follow the instructions. If you are a Windows 10 user in the European Economic Area (EEA), you just have to ensure that you have a Microsoft account.
Everyone outside of Europe will have to synchronize their PC settings with Microsoft to get the extra year of free support for Windows 10.
The process is the same as above – go to Windows Update and look for the option to register for extensive security updates (it is just below where you check for updates). Click on the ‘Subscribe now’ button and follow the instructions, but in this case you must use the Windows -Back -UPP app to synchronize your PC settings with OneDrive (Microsoft’s Cloud Storage Locker).
If you do not want to synchronize the settings of your Windows 10 computer with Microsoft Onedrive, you can simply pay for the extra year of free support.
Again, use the ‘Now Now’ button in Windows Update (as described above) to do this, but choose one of the options to pay – you can hand out $ 30 (or the regional equivalent), or publish 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points (assuming that you naturally have so much).
Just stay on Windows 10 without updates
If you do not want to pay Microsoft, you do not trust the company and therefore you do not want to synchronize content on your PC with the cloud storage, then you might be tempted to keep teasing with Windows 10 min -updates.
Simply put: don’t do this.
It may seem good that you are doing well, and for a while it can be. Who knows, it is honestly a die. However, those monthly security updates that all others who sign up for long -term support will be vital to keep each PC safe.
That’s because every month rolls more and more Vulnerabilities will pop up in Windows 10. And without security updates they remain uncontrolled, which means that hackers may be able to operate these holes in the operating system. The more time ticks, the more exploits remain open, and the greater the chance that you could fall prey to a nasty type. And make no mistake, there are people who will actively try not -patched Windows 10 systems to make a compromise.
And if you think that Microsoft ‘in your company’ is synchronized by your PC settings, it is really nothing compared to which horror you could be visited if a hacker manages to exploit your computer, perhaps getting malware on your system. It is also worth remembering that you only synchronize PC settings with Microsoft’s servers to get extensive support – none of your personal data (and this does not apply to people in Europe, as noted, so people in that region really have no excuse).
All in all, this is not a way that you want to travel down, and whatever you do, do not postpone and just keep driving with a non -supported, unprotected copy of Windows 10.
