With a V6 engine and a luxurious S Line version, the contemporary Nice Price or No Dice Audi TT looks like a real sports car. Let’s see if the price is appropriate for such an important position.

Fashion comes and fashion goes, but getting a good deal is something most people never get enough of. With its Joseph Abboud design style and a host of mechanical upgrades, the 2002 Buick Regal GS that came our way yesterday offered both a solid fashion sense and, at an asking price of $8,500, sparked debate about whether it represented reasonable value. Being a Buick, it also had the unfortunate mystique of blue-haired ladies and 3:30 dinner times, but all that could easily be overlooked. Ultimately, the Regal’s tidy presentation, commendably low mileage, and all the upgrades made a strong argument for the $8,500 asking price. This was reflected in the comments and the solid 69% “Nice Prize” victory the car enjoyed.

Car of the year

Jeremy Clarkson once mockingly described the Audi TT as a ‘hair scrunchie thing… for men’. This came from a track test of the 3.2 coupe edition that he undertook on Top Gear. Clarkson’s rejection of the TT’s supposed form over function proved all the more confusing as he compared it to the similarly priced, positioned and performing classic Mercedes-Benz W113 280 SL in the same episode, proclaiming that he didn’t like the Audi but wouldn’t kick the Benz out of bed for eating crackers.

Not everyone shared Clarkson’s vitriol when it came to the TT. The Audi was named North American Car of the Year at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show. It probably only lost to the Ford Focus after organizers realized the TT was built in Hungary, not North America.

Another bit of disagreement concerns the name of the Audi sports car. The TT title comes from Tourist Trophy, the famous (and infamous) Isle of Man motorcycle race, of which Audi has never turned a tire in anger. The German car manufacturer has actually never made a motorcycle under its name. Honda had celebrated the race twenty years earlier with the Café-style GB500 TT, a real motorcycle. Audi’s weak connection with the annual Isle of Man cycling race is down to its defunct predecessor brand NSU, which did have a history of success on the course.

Bauhaus in that house

Regardless of Clarkson’s rants and the naming association that requires a history lesson, the Audi TT proved a modest success, spanning three generations and overcoming a number of teething problems thanks to the high-speed stability of the first version. The car’s original Bauhaus-inspired styling was diluted with each subsequent refresh, but the intent and packaging remained consistent. Offered in both a 2+2 coupe and a two-seat convertible, the TT also proved unique among its Audi stablemates in using a transverse engine and a Haldex Sychro-based AWD system rather than a longitudinal/Quattro setup. That was thanks to the fact that the TT was a new version of the Volkswagen platform shared with the Golf, Jetta and Audi’s own A3, among others.

This Audi TT 3.2 roadster from 2005 Rock S Line upholstery and a subtle but elegant metallic gray over light gray interior, and, based on the photos in the ad, looks very well cared for. It also has extremely low (65,000) miles for its age and a clean title.

Content behind the style

However, it’s this TT’s drivetrain where things really get interesting. There’s more Volkswagen at play here, with that brand borrowing Audi’s 3.2-liter narrow-angle VR6 engine, six-speed sidewinder dual-clutch DSG transmission, and synchro-based AWD. As fitted to the Audi, the 24-valve V6 produces 247 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. And while many of us may prefer a straight gear, hardly any of us can shift gears faster than the DSG.

The seller does not give us many details about the mechanical condition of the car, but does not mention any problems either. The ad notes some aesthetic flaws, including a bit of pepper in the paint on the nose, curb rash on some alloys and a bit of creasing in the leather of the seats.

On the plus side, the car is very well equipped, with the aforementioned S Line trim package, a Bose sound system, automatic climate control, heated seats and an electrically operated convertible top. Overall it presents as clean and uncluttered, right down to the engine bay with that sweet looking VR6 mill.

Quattro money

The asking price for this well-equipped and apparently beloved TT is $14,500, and while that’s not luxury territory, it is in a somewhat rough neighborhood that’s home to many equally interesting, if not more, competitors. After all, with that money you could buy a solid Porsche Boxster that is only a few years older than the Audi. Then there is Nissan’s 350Z, which many enthusiasts severely underestimate. And those are just two cars that could cloud Audi’s prospects. That also explains why the ad for the car has been on Craigslists for more than three weeks.
