Nate Thompson: “Dave, you saw Carter Hart come back last night (Tuesday night) and have a pretty solid game for Vegas. The goaltending market isn’t sure what that looks like. But for a team like Edmonton, the situation they’re in right now, and obviously goaltending is a big part of their issues, is this something you think they’re going to address or are they going to leave for the rest of the season? Just deal with it internally?”
NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers won’t be a panic move for a goaltender
Dave Pagnotta: “I think they’re going to keep it going internally, unless this is another scenario where, if something falls completely in their lap, they’re definitely going to throw themselves into it. But I think, and Stan Bowman, their GM and management have been pretty consistent in their message that they want to look at other parts of their club, rather than the crease.
And both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are UFAs at the end of the season, into July. I think the goalie position will be something that is addressed in the offseason, not throughout the year. I still think they will look to support the D. I still think they’ll look for someone they can add to the mix that’s tasty and affordable. I think it’s more those two areas than the goalkeeper.
Yes, we’ve heard that in recent weeks, Tristan Jarry and Jordan Binnington. And some people are trying to plug Juuse Saros, and even UPL in Buffalo, which I think hits the bottom of the cap at 4.75. That is still a large number. Moreover, you don’t meet the cap scenario and cap figures, but you have to give up a decent kind of package to strengthen your goaltending.
NHL Rumors: The Edmonton Oilers and Goaltending
I still believe it’s more likely that this will happen in the offseason, and that they will tackle other parts of their club to improve them and try to get them back on track, even if they are some, four or five points, whatever it is, out of the play-offs. But I still think it’s more likely that they focus on other parts of the club, up front and in relation to goal setting, at least for now.”
