But he also tempered his excitement with a dose of reality: he hopes Serena doesn’t attract a number of players capable of beating her. While Bajin is confident Serena can play 60, maybe even 90 minutes of great tennis, the real question is whether she can maintain that level of play every day in a tournament.

Bajin knows one thing for sure: the American will not return for money, publicity or simply out of boredom. She has two children and numerous business ventures. She’s very busy, but… what drives her back to court is pure competitiveness. “That competitor in her is burning,” Bajin explained.

“Honestly, do I think she’ll come back? I really believe so.”

All eyes are now on the upcoming Austin tournament, starting on February 23, where Serena could make her long-awaited return.
