Nottingham Forest Striker Taiwo Awoniyi will miss the last Premier League match of the season of the season against Chelsea due to injury, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed.

The Nigerian attacker, 27, recovered after a serious injury that he sustained during the 2-2 draw of Forest with Leicester City. Awoniyi bumped into the target post and needed surgery for a torn intestine. He was placed in an induced coma, but now wakes up and gets steadily better.

Speak with the Nottingham PostNuno said: “He is much better. He walks and can normally eat again. But I don’t know if he will be in the stadium – that depends on the doctors.”

Although Awoniyi is not on the field, his presence will still be felt. Forest players showed their support for West Ham last week and bore t-shirts with his name during warming. Morgan Gibbs-White also stopped the Awoniyi shirt after scoring.

“We’re going to play again,” said Nuno. “It was a big incident and it is still in our mind. We want to see him completely healthy and back to the team.”

Forest, who is currently seventh in the Premier League, needs a victory against Chelsea in the city to qualify for the UEFA Champions League – their first performance in the European competition in more than 20 years.

Awoniyi may not be on the field, but he remains a strong source of inspiration for the team, fans and the entire city.
