Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy acknowledged defensive mistakes after Thursday’s 118-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome. The loss dropped Utah to 12-21 and marked their sixth loss in eight games.

“Our defensive attention to detail tonight, as far as our team guarding an ISO, was pretty poor,” Hardy said. “When you couple that on a night where you’re losing the possession battle, it’s hard to win. Kawhi Leonard and James Harden are really special ISO players and they took advantage of our mistakes.”

Despite the loss, Hardy praised his team for controlling the paint and individual performances. “I thought we controlled the paint well for the most part, and that was good,” he said. “There were some bright spots. We had a lot of guys playing good games, and part of that is they got a little bit more opportunities.”

Kyle Anderson led Utah off the bench with 22 points, and Hardy explained the guard’s success. “Obviously he’s a really good ballhandler. He’s beaten his man one-on-one a few times, played in the pocket and had some nice cuts,” Hardy said. “Kyle has been in so many situations. He’s been in the playoffs, on different teams, in different roles. I’m very happy for him that he turned in that game.”

Cody Williams, who scored a career-high 18 points, was highlighted for his cutting ability. “If you’re a cutter, the speed of the cut matters depending on how fast the ball is moving downhill. Cody understands the angles and timing needed to get open,” Hardy said.

Hardy also highlighted his team’s commitment despite injuries. “We had everyone out tonight, and the way we played shows there’s a lot of buy-in from our guys. They understand it’s a team game and everyone brings something to the table,” he said. “Our responsibility as a team is to try to make the best recipe regardless of who comes in or doesn’t come in.”

Walker Kessler returned to the road trip for the first time since surgery and Hardy emphasized the importance of his presence. “I told Walker today that I miss yelling at him. Rehab is very isolating and it is very important to get him on the road. He is a big part of our program and has relationships with his teammates and coaches.”

Defensive was Walter Clayton Jr. a bright spot for James Harden and received praise from Hardy. “Walt’s energy production has been much better. He’s very strong and has a big chip on his shoulder. I’ve seen him grow defensively with his physicality and his ability to absorb contact,” Hardy said.

The Jazz will take on the Golden State Warriors on Saturday as they continue their road trip. Hardy’s comments reflect both a recognition of individual efforts and a desire to improve the team’s defense in the future.
