It happened after a police pursuit that started at around 4 p.m. in the city of North County and ended in a collision on the southern side of the highway. At one point the police opened fire on the vehicle and the woman was taken by paramedics to a hospital, Escondido Police Sgt. Andrew Maxwell said.

No other injuries were reported and the police did not release any further details of the incident, including how the chase started.

The identity of women has not been released.

The shooting caused a complete closure of the southern lanes of I-15, which lasted from Friday afternoon to about 11 am on Saturday, Caltrans reported.

“After notification by the local authorities, the research team of DOJ’s California Police Shooting started an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandates,” Bonta said in a statement.

“After completion of the investigation, it will be transferred to DOJ’s special prosecution department within the Criminal Law for Independent Review division.”
