SAN JOSE, Calif. – It’s been a whirlwind week for Washington Spirit outside Kate Wiesner. The 24-year-old has a chance to play in her first NWSL Championship just days after receiving her first call-up to the United States Women’s National Team.
The Penn State alum was selected seventh overall in the 2024 NWSL College Draft; the final edition of the collegiate draft of the competition. The Washington Spirit used its second pick on Wiesner. It’s a design that continues to pay off for the team. Players like Croix Bethune, Hal Hershfelt, Courtney Brown and Makenna Morris (who has since left for Racing Louisville) joined Weisner to round out the Spirit’s talent-laden rookie class. Heather Stainbrook also joined as an undrafted signee.
All six rookies had a significant impact on the team. Thanks in part to their contributions, the Spirit advanced to the NWSL Championship. However, they suffered a defeat against the Orlando Pride. Wiesner was an unused replacement.
