Women’s manager of England, Sarina Wiegman, sees ‘potential’ in her team after 7-0 friendly victory over Jamaica.

Ella Toone’s Brace Plus Lucy Bronze’s Header brought England in solid control during the break, before Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and Beth Mead scored in the second half of their warm-friendly victory over Jamaica before they go to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

The dominant display let Wiegman feel ‘excited’ about the potential of the team, despite the fact that he was in a difficult group with France, the Netherlands and Wales in the euros, where the lion ribbons try to defend their title.

“I am especially excited – I am enthusiastic about the team,” Wiegman explained. “We have had two weeks of training now and it was really good.

“We really got together, you can feel the fight in the team, that we now want to go to the euros and want to go outside and play. And I am not really busy with the third victory, let’s get through the game first.

“We all know what we want, and we also know what our opponents want. So we bring it back and get ready for France.”

Wiegman has previously won the tournament twice as a manager, after he first achieved the performance with the Netherlands in 2017 and then England in 2022, albeit at home grass on both occasions, but she is aware of how difficult the competition will get her experience.

“I have been involved in many tournaments now,” Wiegman noticed “things are developing in the tournament. You have to be prepared. You have to adapt to what you have for you and see what happens and makes big decisions. I think there is a huge potential in this team and we have many options.”

After two months, Lauren James turned out with a hamstring injury to the MatchDay team that was Wiegman who was of the opinion that the team found Momentum, apart from the countries of their wives, loses the Liga from the Women to Belgium and Spain.

“The team is really strong,” the Dutchman reflected in the confidence that the tournament entered. “I think the players are in good shape. They are ready to play, they are ready to start, ready to come up, and that was really good to see.”

Wiegman has also tackled the versatile depth in the fullback and number ten positions while explaining that she will adapt based on which tactics are needed to defeat the opposition.

“We have many players who can play in the ten position. Jess Park has played there, Grace Clinton can play there, Ella Toone plays there, and now LJ is coming back, she can play in the front, but you can also play in the ten role.

“On the right and left, we can find out. Lucy plays the most on the right and on the left we have changed it a few times.

“It all depends on what we need. You try to find a balance in your team, and at the same time you have your game plan that you want to get well, and we have options there.”

Wiegman focused her attention on the friendly victory over Jamaica and described the display as ‘a good performance’ after he expected a dominant display, but has the feeling that there is room for improvement.

“We expected that we would be a lot in the last third, so we wanted to show what we could go there. Of course we scored seven goals. That is really nice. And yet we thought we could do a little better at some times, getting a little more calm and made an extra break.

“But in general I am really happy with the performance. We know that Jamaica didn’t have all their best players, so they struggled a bit. But you still have to do it yourself.”
