Why the Maple Leafs should make an offer for Ducks defenseman Pavel Mintyukov

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a rough season with a bleak outlook right now. They have struggled to maintain consistency early, are outplayed most nights and find themselves six points behind the final Wild Card spot in the East entering the Olympic break.
They haven’t been mathematically eliminated from the postseason yet, but the odds are not on their side to qualify for the playoffs for the tenth straight season. It is therefore in their interest to recalibrate the composition of their squad and set themselves up for future success as early as next year through a deadline reshuffle. They can fill the cupboard with draft picks and prospects to make bigger upgrades, or look for disgruntled young players who need a fresh start elsewhere.
The latter option could be intriguing if they can find the ideal targets that fit their window and already have some NHL experience under their belt. Therefore, it would be in the Leafs’ best interest to make an offer for Anaheim Ducks defenseman Pavel Mintyukov.

Sennecke would do well to recover after losing this puck, and this is where Pavel Mintyukov is at his best: operating in the offensive zone with the puck on his stick. He shows some patience and great vision to find Gauthier on the other side

At first glance, the idea that the Ducks would be open to moving Mintyukov less than four years after selecting him 10th overall in 2022 seems like a stretch. After all, they are a team on the rise and the Russian blueliner fits right into their contention window as he is only 22 years old at the time of filing. His offensive production this season hasn’t been overwhelming, but he has collected 15 points (six goals and nine assists) in 51 games. Mintyukov is capable of producing at least 20 points or more, as evidenced by his rookie season when he scored 28 points in 2023-2024.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a young player who feels dissatisfied with his limited role and wouldn’t mind a change of scenery. Mintyukov has been replaced on the left side of Anaheim’s depth chart by Jackson LaCombe and Olen Zellweger, while also being scratched healthy by head coach Joel Quenneville in favor of Ian Moore. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported back in November that Mintyukov would be open to a move if he didn’t get a stable spot in the lineup, and it’s fair to wonder if those feelings will resurface closer to the deadline. happened last season too.

Mintyukov’s potential certainly hasn’t diminished, but this does have the hallmarks of a buy-low candidate who could benefit from being in a different environment. This is an offensive defenseman who is a strong puck mover, has high mobility and good reach to fend off defenders and break up play. The Ducks may not need him since they already have LaCombe and Zellweger, but a team like the Leafs could benefit greatly from adding Mintyukov to the mix.

It’s been well documented that the Leafs have struggled to move the puck on the back end and don’t have enough options internally to provide that on a consistent basis. That glaring weakness was exposed by the Florida Panthers in the playoffs and is a major reason why this year’s team has struggled to put the puck on the ice. General manager Brad Treliving may have stepped up efforts to address this issue in recent weeks, but at this point there is still a step to be taken.

Targeting Mintyukov would help address this issue while fitting into the competitive window the Leafs want to keep open with Auston Matthews and William Nylander still under contract. There could be an opportunity for Mintyukov to get regular minutes and possibly power play time, especially if players like Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Morgan Rielly are moved in the coming months. If he finds himself in a better situation that allows him to regain some of the confidence he lost due to being left behind by the Ducks, it could help unlock his potential as an offensive defenseman.

Anaheim is in the playoffs in the West and would likely be a buyer at the deadline, so it’s a good fit for a Leafs team looking to sell some assets. Whether the Ducks get back an Ekman-Larsson, Bobby McMann or Scott Laughton, the Leafs would be wise to ask Mintyukov to be part of the package they get back, along with a few draft picks. Even if it’s more of a buy-low trade, it wouldn’t be too outlandish a price for Toronto.

However this is accomplished, it would be in the Leafs’ best interest to target Mintyukov as part of their retooling efforts.
