The possibilities are endless when it comes to the TaylorMade Qi4D driver, so you better know what you’re doing when you’re trying to find the right setting.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipment, co-host Johnny Wunder explained how much he learned about the driver after a fitting with TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld.

“These Qi4D headlines are very nuanced, and I need to bring that out now,” Wunder said. ‘You can mess up that head if you don’t know what you’re doing.
And I’ve said this a few times on this podcast, and just in videos, because you’re moving so much weight, you really need to know.

With the 12 settings on TaylorMade’s FCT loft cover and the four interchangeable weights that come standard with two 4g weights and two 9g weights, there are 128 combinations using just the standard weights and standard loft covers. That doesn’t take into account the two other loft covers (1.5˚ and 1.0˚) available to TaylorMade tour fitters.

With so many options, now more than ever it’s up to mechanics to be able to actually unlock the Qi4D driver.

“You really have to be a master at working with that much weight to be able to move and understand TaylorMade’s different FCT sleeves,” Wunder said. “So those drivers, I think as they go along, I think top mechanics, your True Specs, your Club Champions, your cool clubs, some of the mechanics at Golf Galaxy, PGA Tour Superstore, your top mechanics, your active mechanics. By the time we get to summer, everyone will have figured it out.”

SHAPED FOR SPEED The redesigned head profile increases ball speed thanks to improved aerodynamics developed through advanced simulations. FACE FOR DISTANCE 60x Carbon Twist Face™ is a technological cornerstone that delivers weight savings, incredible ball speed and greater consistency compared to a titanium face. ADJUSTABLE PERFORMANCE 4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimal flight. TOUR-PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES New and improved cut-through Speed Pocket™ protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face hits. Advanced CAD modeling creates a design with clear and powerful sound, a foundation for TaylorMade driver performance. The multi-material construction allows engineers to strategically place mass in areas of the head where it maximizes performance, speed and stability.

Wunder said that in the initial tests of the TaylorMade series with Charles Howell III, he had trouble finding the face because neither he nor Wunder really understood how to properly move the weight to fix it.

But after Wunder matched Rietveld, he was able to help him a little better.

“I said, ‘Hey, look, why don’t you take all the weight, the nines on the back and the fours on the front, switch them up, put it in 10.5 and then move the lie to upright,’” Wunder said. “Because that’s what Adrian did for me and I had the same problem with QI4D as Charlie. I found it difficult to find the right part of the face to optimize the numbers.
