Why money is already a difficult subject with this Ryder Cup

There are many differences between the American and European teams with this Ryder Cup, but not just as grim as their bank accounts.

In short, the Americans – as individuals – benefit financially from their involvement of the cup. The European side does not. At least not immediately. The context is of course much more nuanced.

For the last 12 Ryder Cups, dating from 1999, American golfers and captains have received $ 200,000 donations to a charity of your choice. It started in a somewhat controversial way, with captain Ben Crenshaw a month before the event at the 1999 PGA championship in Medinah. But Crenshaw was against a formidable opponent: top players Tiger Woods and David Duval did not love how business the cup had become.

“It’s not greed,” Said Woods then. “It is the fact that we want to help. We want to donate money to our charities in our local areas. So much money is generated at the Ryder Cup, it has become a business event.”

That year was the first year of $ 200,000 charity payments, which ultimately benefited the basis of players. That amount has never been changed in the years since … so far.

This year’s American side not only receives $ 300,000 donations to a charity of their choice, they also receive a $ 200,000 stipendium to do with what they want. Reports of this change broke in November and were completed by the PGA in December.

“Well, the PGA of America came to me, they wanted to bring the Ryder Cup to the current day,” the American captain Keegan Bradley clarified in Bethpage Black on Monday. “The charity dollars had not changed since 1999 and they asked me to make a little shepherd to make it in 2025.”

In a era of the empowerment of players and immense ratings of TV -rights, this type of arrangement would not cause much worries if it does not compete so drastically the situation of their opponents.

European players do that not Receive payment of any nature whatsoever, and when asked by Kapitein Luke Donald about a possible change to that tradition, the team apparently decided that such income should continue to go directly to the DP world tour, where many of them play their first professional events.

“This came up and I wanted to stay ahead,” European captain Luke Donald told Sky Sports Monday. “I spoke with the 12 boys in Rome when it seemed as if the US would do something else with payments and, you know, each of them was just like:” We don’t want it – this is not a week to be paid. “

All this follows a controversial 2023 cup when compensation again became a hot topic. Various reports during (and next) the week called Patrick Cantlay’s hat without a uniform a quiet protest of kind against the compensation scheme. While Cantlay denied the idea, the father of Xander Schauffele, Stefan, went to the good work with reporters who called for a greater transparency of how Ryder Cup is used. The event is a huge money maker for both sides of ownership – the PGA of America and the DPWT – especially for the hosting side. Financial documents have shown how enormously important a home Ryder Cup is for the sustainability of the DPWT, which is undoubtedly part of what the decision makes an obvious for Team Europe.

But from the start of the court of public opinion last fall, the immediate reaction of European players such as Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, who both said they would like to pay to play the Ryder Cup because of the event that means for them. Keegan Bradley later promised all $ 500,000 of what he receives goes to a good cause. Tiger Woods, who spoke in the Bahamas a few weeks later during his event, took them as literally as possible.

“If the Europeans want to pay to be in the Ryder Cup, that is their decision to do that, that’s their team,” Woods said. “I know that when it is on European soil that it subsidizes the majority of their tour, so it is a big event for the European tour and if they want to pay to play in it, it is so.”

Although that result is very unlikely, it is clear that this subject is not leaving quickly and these teams can distribute forever.
