We’re only two games into Liam Rosenior’s reign at Chelsea, but there are signs that the new man in charge could be the perfect head coach for the Blues… or at least for Todd Boehly and the rest of their owners.
What do you mean?
Let’s start off the field: There is no doubt that Rosenior can talk about a good game. He comes across as intelligent, empathetic and serious in his desire to treat his players as human beings – something the wider football world could learn from.
Unfortunately for Rosenior, football fans tend to view sincerity as a weakness, especially when it ventures into David Brent territory.
Earlier this week, an excerpt from a Ligue 1 documentary about his time in charge of Strasbourg in France was released.
Rosenior describes his philosophy and management style.
“In English ‘manage’, if you split it into two words it’s ‘man’, ‘age’, so you’re aging men,” he said. Answers on a postcard for that.

Rosenior named Brendan Rodgers one of his coaching idols in his first interview with his new club, but the biggest lesson he could learn from his former Reading manager is what not to say.
None of this will particularly bother Chelsea’s owners, whose main goal is to get a return on their investment if they decide to sell the club.
What do you think of Liam Rosenior’s potential as Chelsea head coach?
- He seems like a great fit.
- I’m not convinced he’s the right choice.

How are things different from Enzo Maresca?
Apart from his eagerness to work with and not against the medical team, Rosenior wants to build up on the pitch more through his central midfielders than through Maresca, so gone are the inverted full-backs.
Against Arsenal this culminated in some tricky situations as the defense came under pressure time and time again through misplaced passes, but it is a style that can be exciting to watch when it works out well.
While Maresca avoided involving his goalkeeper in the build-up, mainly due to Robert Sanchez’s lack of composure on the ball, Rosenior is encouraging him to ‘do things he hasn’t done before’.
He has been coy about what exactly those things are, but based on the results of the first 20 minutes against Arsenal, he may need to explain them a little better to Sánchez.
Something says a goalkeeper change is on the way before the January transfer window closes or early next summer.
Will Rosenior succeed?
It depends on your definition of success. For the fans, it means winning trophies and in that respect only time will tell – there is still little chance of them lifting the Carabao Cup in March.
As for the owners? Once he is able to develop their young so that they can be resold for a profit, they may not have to worry too much about the trophy cabinet for a while.
