On GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher Summit on Cabot citrus farmsOne of our favorite questions to ask the on-site instructors is this: What is one shot every player should learn to hit that will make him or her a better player?
Responses vary by teacher, but several of them chose to teach a reliable and repeatable go-to shot around the greens. And GOLF teacher to watch Heather Angell is no exception.
The year’s best-selling hybrid launches high to hold the green

“The hybrid putt is one of my favorites,” she said. “Depending on the type of course you play – if it’s a course with a lot of staging areas around the green, the hybrid is a great club to use as the grass is often a bit too hairy for putting, especially if you’re a few feet from the green.”
Hybrids have a crucial amount of loft that a putter doesn’t have, allowing you to get the ball moving on the grass even with a relatively small swing.
Tight lies are also great for hybrid use, Angell says, because with a hybrid you can get a smooth roll instead of potentially hitting the ball with an iron.
How can you become more adept with your hybrid on the greens? Hold the club all the way down at the bottom of the grip for maximum control, says Angell. Then make a putting style stroke. It really is that simple.
“I teach that shot all the time in clinics,” says Angell. “It’s just a great shot to learn and use on the green because you get the ball in the air enough to carry the fluffy grass, but you never lose that control.”
When you’re trying to break 100 or 90, minimizing mistakes around the green is one of the quickest ways to lower scores. Becoming gentler with your hybrid on greenside shots is one way to do that. Try Angell’s advice and watch your scores start to drop in 2026.
