Why it doesn’t make sense to rank golf clubs | Fully equipped

You have heard this on this platform earlier, but there are no more “best” in terms of golf clubs.

In the episode of this Week van Golf’s fully equipped, fellow guesthouse Johnny Wunder explained why the ranking of golf clubs by “What’s the Best” is simply not useful.

“It’s a snapshot on time and it doesn’t work – it’s not good for golfers to rank golf clubs, especially nowadays,” said Wunder. “Now, 50 years ago, an argument would have been made because there were bangers, there were losers, there were people who just had bad ideas.

“Nowadays even the bad ideas are bangers. Like, they are all good.”

Just about every golf club on the market can help someone achieve a specific goal with his game. Similarly, not every golf club will seem ‘good’ for everyone because it may not have been designed for that specific golfer or what that golfer wants to do.

Most of these “best” lists are easily based on a few days or a week of testing with specific golfers. Not necessarily a comprehensive monster. Even with a massive attempt by the players, it is not feasible to take into account all possible factors that can play or a club works well for someone or not.

“What happens, however, with these hot lists is that it gives you the stigma that it has four stars, or it received a gold medal, or it received this,” said Wunder. “And it is Bob and Betsy Ross in the driving range in Arizona for two days, with nothing but drivers and 3-wooden all day and it says nothing about them. They write on their small notes, they go, this was good, this was good.

“With another loft, with a different type of head, with a different shaft, on a different length, with a different ball. They don’t get fit at all. It’s like, here is a club, beat it, tell me what you think.”

That is why the trick is to find out which is suitable for you and with which settings, shafts and other factors that can be determined in a suitable environment.

Here at Golf our goal is to help you exactly, and the best way to get fit.

“What is best for the golfer is more or less just encouraging to get fit, to give them as much information as human and let them go in there,” Wunder said.
