Hawaii’s love affair with spam is an integral part of its history and stronger than ever, with the annual Wakiki -Spamjam celebrating his 21st edition.
The Spamjam is a full event dedicated to the processed pork in a can and will be unraveled on Saturday 26 April from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu as a block party on Saturday 26 April from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
It is ‘a cultural tradition in Hawaii, and assessed as one of the best annual food festivals in Hawaii’, according to his website.
Participating restaurants will serve dishes with spam of a large variety, from popular musubis that look like spam sushi, to unexpected creations such as Spam Musubi Butter Mochi.

“Every place in the world seems to have its characteristic food festival,” says the site of the event.
“You may have heard about tomatoes, ribs, onions or pumpkins, but you’ve never seen anything like that, a spam festival!”
Nearly seven million cans-introduced spam-introduced by Hormel Foods in Minnesota in 1937 consumed in Hawaii every year.
“More spam is consumed per person in Hawaii than in any other state in the United States,” said the organizers of the event.

How was Hawaii obsessed with spam?
Four years after Spam was invented, the US arrived the Second World War. Hormel sent 100 million pounds of spam to American troops, many who were located in Hawaii.
Spam became a big hit because it was full of taste and proteins, was not expensive and had a long shelf life. According to the maker, spam is good for a maximum of five years after the production date.
“It remained good over time. It was very versatile, “said Scott Gamble, vice president of LH Gamble Company who supplies spam to the entire state, said Vs today.
“There are many limitations where Hawaii is so separated from the rest of the US when it comes to food retention.”

Native Hawaiians also started to eat spam and it remained on the island even after the war ended.
Nowadays, many Hawaiians have a somewhat love-hate relationship with the staple. It is tasty and part of the identity of the state, but is also unhealthy and has contributed to the local obesity problem.
It is also unmistakable that Spam only arrived in Hawaii because of the American imperialism.
But both for visitors and the locals it is difficult to prevent spam from eating spam in some form, either with eggs and rice for breakfast or in a musubi. Spam is so worshiped that it has even enjoyed the National Spam Musubi Day since 2021.
“It’s such an iconic item,” said Gamble.
