Why Callaway’s Opus SP+ wedge fills a unique niche | Fully equipped

We all want to hit low, spinny wedge shots and one skip and rip back on a putting green. Callaway’s new Opus SP+ wedge is built to do just that.

So should everyone be looking for Callaway’s latest short game option?

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder explained why Callaway is now offering this unique wedge with an ultra-high center of gravity.

As Wunder explained, modern wedge design was mainly influenced by the Cleveland 588 wedge, which didn’t really have a super high center of gravity. But to generate those low launch and high spin shots, a player can adjust his technique to return the ball to his stance and lock it in to produce the desired trajectory.

Introducing the all-new Opus SP+ with Spin Pocket™ Construction + Tungsten, a new extension of our Opus SP family. Tour-preferred design with an even higher center of gravity for more spin and precision.

“It was a little bit dependent on the player, if you had to get him up, get him up. If you had to knock him down, the technique would allow you to do that,” Wunder said. So SP+ bakes that in a bit for you. So if you’re a player, if you’re a good player with good hands, who wants to hit the ball even lower and not really play with your right foot and just hit a stock shot and get the launch down, that’s a great wedge to have.”

This wedge immediately becomes a great option for players who want to drive the center of gravity as high as possible with lead tape on the top of the club, like Akshay Bhatia.

Interestingly, the Opus SP platform already had a high center of gravity with the club’s hollowed out sole to remove weight low in the club head. SP+ takes that concept one step further by making that cavity larger and adding tungsten in the top line.

It’s not a huge difference in launch and spin, maybe a degree, Wunder said before his tests, but it gives you the option. It’s also not a replacement for the Opus SP, just another option in the family.

‘It’s a bit like the comparison I would make if you were a [Qunatum] TD Max player and you like how that flies, but you need a little less spin, then you would go to the TD head,” Wunder said. “It just gives you that little silo there that you can go to if you want to drive it, drive the launch down even further.”
