Why Anthony Joshua could lose $66 million despite winning a knockout fight with Jake Paul

Joshua will have to pay both US and UK taxes on his $140 million prize money.

Anthony Joshua could lose millions despite his knockout victory in a boxing match against Jake Paul.

The esteemed fighter came out on top in his December 19 fight against the influencer-turned-boxer. However, Joshua may not get the expected payday that fans might think, with Paul actually earning more from the whole spectacle.

According to Yahoo Sportsthe British fighter will actually lose about half of the $140 million prize money, on top of a seven-day suspension due to boxing regulations. The fight ended with a sixth-round knockout punch from Joshua, leaving Paul with significant injuries.

The abrupt end to the fight took place in Miami and sent shockwaves through social media and boxing fans. Paul posted an update on his injuries the next day. He confirmed that Joshua’s hits left him with a broken jaw in two places.

In addition to a break from the ring, Joshua will also take some big hits financially. Due to tax restrictions in the US, where the fight took place, and in Britain, where Joshua has citizenship, he will have to claim millions of his earnings.

Despite receiving $140 million from the victory, he will have to give up 37% of this money due to US federal income tax, in addition to $11.3 million in UK taxes, entitled His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Almost 3 million more goes to national insurance premiums.

This leaves him with a fraction of the initial payout, which amounts to a take home price of $74 million. On the other hand, Paul will leave with more money left despite the knockout loss, and will only have to give up $55 million for US taxes.

Although they left with less prize money, many in the boxing community have saluted Joshua for his defeat to Paul. The internet personality’s transition into boxing has drawn polarizing reactions from boxing fans. To some, his recent loss feels like ‘karma’, especially because of his previous, and controversial, fights with retired boxing giants like Mayweather and Tyson.

Many still debate the legitimacy of Paul’s boxing career. However, this fight itself also showed what a seasoned professional can do in the ring.
