I doubt any charity or company will take that idea and run with it as a welfare initiative or fundraiser. That’s because it would be way too general, too unusual, too hard to sell as a concept, too strange, too hard to explain, and frankly unrealistic in their eyes, I suspect. Or is it? In 2019, I decided to give myself a break from alcohol. I planned to start on January 1, 2020, but as the clock counted down I decided I could actually just start in December.

I had waited until the new year to start my “Sober Year” because all resolutions start in January, right? Well no – not always. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never had a solution for me since January 1stst until December 31st. My New Year’s resolutions usually last a few weeks, and that’s for a whole bunch of different reasons, but I was desperate for another goal.

I decided to do a Dry December instead of a Dry January… why wait? I was just “wasting my own time,” as my favorite teacher used to say. When I woke up on December 8, 2019, I didn’t have a crushing hangover. I had drunk two gin and tonics the night before. We had been with friends, had dinner, had fun and stayed the night. I made myself the ‘cocktail waitress’ and made sure I only put tonic in my glass when refilling my drink. It felt good to get up the next day. and I know I haven’t had a drink in a while. I was glad I didn’t have a major low point.
