‘Who would I rather have at the front? Nick Woltemade or Alexander Isak?’ Pat Nevin ponders…

Pat Nevin talked about Alexander Isak and Nick Woltemade.

After going on strike and refusing to train or play, Isak eventually forced his move to Liverpool.

With Callum Wilson also leaving, Eddie Howe is recruiting Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade as his two main strikers for the 2025/26 season.

Pat Nevin ponders the question… ‘Who would I rather have up front? Nick Woltemade or Alexander Isak?’

Pat Nevin talks to OLBG about Nick Woltemade and Alexander Isak:

“I was at the first match when Nick Woltemade played [for Newcastle United].

“As a commentator I had to be careful with my comments because you can get a little carried away in the moment (but) after about an hour I thought, ‘Who would I rather have at the front? Nick Woltemade or Alexander Isak?’

“Isak is obviously a better technical player, but you would like to have Woltemade at the top of your line as a player because he will fight and struggle.

“He will give you everything you want as a football fan, he will chase. The passion you have at Newcastle was completely reflected by that guy.”

“He’s got a big cheesy grin on his face. And I know it’s an old-fashioned cliché, but he’s a throwback to another era.”

“Because if someone kicks him, he says, ‘Yeah, okay, I’ll kick you back.’ I’m not going to roll around. He is one of the least modern looking footballers you have ever seen in your life. He’s one of the least modern-looking footballers you’ve ever seen in your life.”

“But technically he is also a very, very good footballer. When he came over, he told people that all that stuff in the air, scoring headers, is not his thing. Yes, right.”

“Either he’s lying to us or he’s been working hard on it lately. And the other thing about him is you hang him there, make him do all that work and hope he doesn’t get hurt.”

“If I played behind him, where the wide areas are 10 behind him, I would love it. Because not only does he fight and fight, he doesn’t go past the defenders that much, but he holds the ball up brilliantly and you know he has the ability to lay it off and give you a good ball into the final third running towards defenders.”

“He is absolutely brilliant and perfect for Newcastle United.

“I already love Nick Woltemade as a footballer and the Newcastle fans are absolutely thrilled with him.”
