In just a few weeks, John Cena will officially retire from professional wrestling and will have his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC.
There are plenty of things that can be said about John Cena’s retirement tour. Some really enjoyed it, while others felt like a lot more could have been done to make it feel special. Either way, it’s almost coming to an end and we’ll soon find out who gets the honor of facing Cena in his final appearance.
It certainly seems like the fan consensus is that WWE would have to throw a ton of money at AEW to bring Edge over for one match. While that feels like the right move, it seems like the company won’t do it – especially now that there’s a tournament element involved.
There are still a handful of guys left who would find it meaningful to fight John Cena in his last professional match. But in our eyes, of the remaining contenders, there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest – and his name is Gunther.
Gunther should defeat John Cena in his final match
This is hardly a controversial position and the majority of fans will likely agree that Gunther is the right man. Equally, some would say Gunther doesn’t need John Cena’s defeat, with Carmelo Hayes perhaps the next best candidate. Alas, Gunther just returned with a new look and his epic old theme music, and Cena thrives on going one-on-one with big, bad heels.
Gunther is the next version of that and he’s the kind of guy who can hold the world title for as long as the company needs him to, whether it’s as a babyface (I’m not sure how that would go) or as a heel. For Cena, though, he’ll want to transfer someone in the most effective way possible, and as obvious as it may feel, this is the right way to go.
