Question “Who are you, Naples?”The fact that the French artist JR has addressed the Napolitan people by inviting everyone to think about how he would like to be remembered, at a certain moment the Napolitans responded to their portraits and stories that were recorded by the artist. Exactly in September 2024, when JR started an in -depth exploration of the complex cultural identity of the city in Naples. In a week, from 23 to 29 September, the protagonists of the initiative were the citizens of seven neighborhoods: Piazza Sanità, Piazza Dante, Fuorigrotta, Mergellina, San Giovanni a Teduccio, Piazza Cavour and Borgo di Santonio. During this intense period, the portraits and stories of 606 Napolitans were collected – including pizza boks, firefighters, police officers, priests, writers, musicians, tourists, grandmothers, students and the mayor themselves – of various social and cultural background. They were those who chose how to be represented and told their story in Italian or Napolitan.
All made with the same light, portraits attribute equal dignity to every person involved.

The origin and composition of the monumental photographic collage created by JR for the facade of the Duomo will also be told in an exhibition in the Gallerie d’Italia in Intesa Sanpaolo in Via Toledo, where the ‘behind the scenes’ of the project can also be restored. To be seen, three murals of the series are also shown to visitors ChroniclesMade in France, Cuba and the US, to show how JR’s art can stimulate conversations by creating a powerful visual impact.
Refined, rough, chaotic, poetic, hung between the sea and volcano, Naples turned out to be an ideal place for this collective story.
The exposure catalog is published by the Allemandi Publishing Company.
