The White SOX announced that Infielder today Chase Mile was placed on the 10-day wounded list, retroactive force until August 4, with a right-handed thumb contusion. Infielder Jacob Amaya has been selected to take his place on the Roster. To open a 40-man place for Amaya, right-handed Gus Varland is designated for assignment.
The injury of Meidroth actually dates more than a week. On July 30, he was hit by a throw from Taijuan Walkeras seen in This clip from MLB.com. The club clearly did not think it was a serious issue, because they did not immediately put him on the IL. However, since then he has not started anymore. He played on Sunday and entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning.
Probably the thumb is not healed as hoped, so the SOX will give him a little more peace. IL -Stints can be reversed for three days if the player did not play in that time frame, which the SOX did here, so Midroth could be back in a week if his condition improves.

Amaya gives them an extra infielder to have at hand. He has 62 games of big league experience, usually after he has played shortstop, but also sprinkled with some second base. He also played a third base in the minors. He is considered a good defender, but has not touched much, with a .144/.176/.158 line in the large competitions. He no longer has any options and was done by distance earlier this year. Since then he has been good at Triple-A, with a .291/.402/.464 line in 132 plate performances. He spent 28.8% of those trips to the plate, but also ran at a pace of 15.2%.
He will try to transfer part of that to the major competitions. His status outside the options can give him a thin guard for a grid place. On the other hand, Mead can still be chosen while Rojas has a terrible season and is at pace for a non-tender at the end of the season. When Meidroth returns, Amaya might be able to hang because he is still relatively young and years removed from qualifying for arbitration.
As far as Varland is concerned, he became mid -March for the minors for the opening of the opening. He will have one option season after this year and has a little less than a year of service time.
