Our big wet president wants the United States to build kei cars, despite the myriad reasons why the average American consumer probably wouldn’t want one. However, we Jalops are not the average American consumers. We’re car enthusiasts with an affinity for the weird, and many of us would love to have a little keijidosha in our own garage. But a world of modern kei cars on American streets would be very different from our current world of 25-year-old imports, which begs the question: Which modern kei car would you buy if they were suddenly legal here?
For our rules, we’re talking about every kei class vehicle currently available in the Japanese market. Yes, Trump wants them built here, but that’s not what we’re talking about today. We’re not talking about ’90s imports either, so no AZ-1s or Beats or Cappuccinos here – just current makes and models. Now that the entire Japanese market of 660cc and below is available to you, which kei car would you buy?
HiJet all day
If I could get a modern kei vehicle, I would buy a Daihatsu HiJet truck. What would you go for? Do you stare out over the Pacific Ocean at night, longing for a Daihatsu Copen, or would you like to transport your family in a sweet kei van? Leave your answer below and I’ll pick my favorite answers later this week.
