Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh believes that the decision to travel to India for the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup rests solely with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Notably, the BCB opted not to send their players to India for the global tournament after the BCCI requested the removal of Mustafizur Rahman from playing in the Indian Premier League, in the wake of ongoing cross-border violence.

Harbhajan believes that the decision not to travel to India rests solely with the Bangladesh authorities, and since the matches can easily be shifted to co-hosts Sri Lanka, the International Cricket Council (ICC) can make arrangements accordingly. The former Indian cricketer also believes that the situation of communal violence in Bangladesh is quite unfortunate.

“Due to the various events that have taken place in the last few days, Bangladesh does not want to come to India. Whatever has happened in Bangladesh, it is wrong. ICC has to take a decision on their request. We welcome everyone to India, but whether they (Bangladesh) want to come here or not is their choice,” Harbhajan said. Tribune India.

The Bangla Tigers, placed in Group C of the league stage, were due to play three of their matches in India – all at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta. However, they have made a formal request to the organizers to arrange a makeshift venue. However, the BCCI may not play a role in influencing the ICC’s decision.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had made it clear through a media statement that Kolkata Knight Riders will not be allowed to perform Mustafizur for the upcoming IPL 2026, after which the franchise acted as per the instructions. BCB did not entirely welcome the decision not to admit a Bangladeshi player for political reasons, and therefore opted not to play the World Cup in the neighboring country.

“Due to the recent developments going on everywhere, BCCI has directed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh from their squad, and BCCI has also said that if they ask for replacement, BCCI will allow the replacement,” Saikia had stated earlier.

The 2026 T20 World Cup is about a month away Bangladesh will play their first match against West Indies on February 7. After playing the Caribbean, they would also take on Italy and England in Kolkata. However, it will now be interesting to see what last-minute changes are made to the original schedule of the 20-team event.
