The Calgary Flames did some long -awaited things because they signed RFA Connor Zary for a three -year -old deal with an AAV of $ 3.775 million. The question now remains about how he will be used this season, and whether an outbreak performance is in the cards for the 23-year-old.
There is a lot of talk about whether Zary is a center or a winger at NHL level. While he was set up as a center, he played most of his pro hockey career on the wing, where he flourished. One thing is certain: Zary has disappeared for a large year, and with all the sound around his contract, the flames can finally concentrate on how they will approach Zary’s further development and use
Where does Zary fit in the line -up?
You can debate which position Zary is the most suitable, but we can all agree that the Flames did not get it to the middle position long enough. In addition to a few games here and there, Zary has not yet had a chance to really settle as a center at the NHL level so far.
Zary as a center
Most Flames fans want to see Zary in the middle, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. First, who is he from the middle position to get his shot? He will certainly not take the place of Nazem Kadri. I also don’t see him taking the place of Morgan Frost, and it will also be difficult to eliminate Mikael Backlund. If the flames want to place a center from the start, he should start on the fourth line that I don’t see happening.
Huberdeau – Frost – Coronato
Pospisil – Kadri – Shangovich
Farabee – Backlund – Coleman
Lomberg – Zary – Klapka
Unless Backlund is deteriorating heavily this season and the new fourth line center of the Flames will be, I see that as an opportunity for Zary to postpone centering players such as Joel Farabee and Blake Coleman. There is also the possibility for him to play the middle if an injury to other players were to take place. Backlund as the fourth line center of the team is not a terrible idea, because he showed some important regression last season. The flames must give priority to their youth.
Huberdeau – Frost – Coronato
Pospisil – Kadri – Shangovich
Farabee – Zary – Coleman
Lomberg – Backlund – Klapka
However, I do not see this scenario happening immediately at the start of the year. I think the team will start again with Zary on the wing, which I will talk about.
Place him on the wing
Putting Zary on the wing seems to be the most likely option at the moment. The long jam in the middle is present, but there is just as much log on the wing.
The team could start playing with boys like Backlund and Coleman, but we have to see Zary play with more skill. Here is another series of rough lines that can be an option:
Huberdeau – Kadri – Zary
Coleman – Backlund – Coronato
Farabee – Frost – Sharangovich
Lomberg – Pospisil – Klapka
In this scenario, Zary is accompanied by more skill with Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. He will also be higher in the line -up, so the opportunities are for him to succeed. Although Zary usually has played left wing, there is always the possibility to experiment early in the season.
What do fans expect from Zary this season?
I think I speak for many when I say that Flames -fans are expecting a large year from Zary. He got a bridge deal as a way to prove the team that his game is more. Zary has the ability to be a top-six-ahead in the NHL. It is only about staying healthy and maintaining consistency.
50+ points are absolutely realistic, assuming that Zary remains healthy. Needless to say, it is time for him to really settle at the NHL level, because he will be part of the future of the Flames for a long time.
