By that time in 2008, Serbia had just completed its largest WTA summer: Between June 9 and August 17“ Ana Ivanovic And Jelena Jankovic were ranked no. 1 and no. 2 in the world.
For nine weeks a small country of Serbia, with the population of 6.5 million, was at the top of the WTA world. Ana Ivanovic had just lifted her first Grand Slam trophy in Roland Garros, a triumph that pushed her to world no. 1. The remarkable consistency of Jelena Jankovic then pushed her to the top on 11 August, and she finally closed the season as the end of the year 1. In the meantime, a young Novak Djokovic on the ATP side was fast in the ranks, the start of a golden era for Serbian tennis.

According to Tennis Serbiawho inspired this message, Serbia remains one of the only three countries ever that keeps both no. 1 and no. 2 spots in the WTA rangers at the same time– The others are Belgium (Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters) and the United States (Serena Williams and Venus Williams).
The Serbian regime ended on 25 August 2008, when the top 10 reflected the fierce international rivalry of the era: the Williams sisters for the US, a wave of six Russian stars and the two Serbs at the top.
