Chances are you’ve been on a ride before, whether you choose the one with the misused German word, or the one that unnecessarily swapped an “i” for a “y.” I’ve been using them for years, and I remember using them in high school before you had to enter your destination into the app and drivers would just tell you “don’t try another one” if your destination was too far away. Needless to say, I’ve been on hundreds of rideshare rides, so I’ve been in quite a large number of different rideshare cars, and some make more sense than others.
We’ve asked you in the past to share the cars you like to get as Ubers and Lyfts, so this isn’t necessarily about that topic, but it’s about the car that made you scratch your head and say, “Why would anyone do ride-sharing in That car?” If you’ve ever had that experience when calling an Uber, let us know in the comments below.
A hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo
There are plenty of logical cars that people can use as car-shares: things like Toyota hybrids, Honda Civics and Kia Carnivals. In fact, living in LA we get a lot of electric cars, but the one vehicle name that popped up on my phone screen that I never expected to see was a Hyundai Nexo. The Nexo also has no shade, it’s a cool, innovative and spacious little crossover. I was just surprised to see someone using a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle used as an Uber.
California is one of the few places in the world where the public has relatively easy access to hydrogen fuel. Of the 52 publicly available hydrogen fueling stations in the United States, 50 are in California, so the chances of getting a hydrogen ride-hailing car here are significantly higher than anywhere else in the US, but still slim.
The ride was great though, no complaints from me as a rider. It only shocked me when I felt sick, like Tesla Model Y Ubers do, and it also didn’t smell as bad or make me as deaf as most 8-year-old Camrys I tend to get. But it certainly makes for a futuristic-sounding sentence: “I used my iPhone to call my hydrogen-powered Uber.” Anyone, tell us about the strangest shared car you’ve ever been in!
